What happens after the shoot is vital to get the most striking and memorable results
Post-production in photography refers to editing and enhancing photos to create a polished, professional final product. This can involve retouching, adjusting colors and lighting, cropping images, removing unwanted objects, and adding special effects. It is an essential part of any professional photographer’s workflow
The objective of much interior imagery is to give an impression of the overall space, and this requires a wide perspective — like that of your eyes as you enter a room, before you focus on details.
In photography, this requires the use of a wide angle lens that fits more in to the shot but introduces distortion to straight lines — especially at the edges of the frame. This requires expert correction to return walls, doors and other straight edges to ‘normal’. Widening the perspective also distorts the perception of scale between near and far objects that requires careful composition.
Balancing external and interior lighting is a complex task, both in terms of the overall contrast and brightness and the colour tone of the light sources. The human eye does this remarkably effectively but the RAW images from the camera record precisely the amount and ‘temperature’ of the light landing on the sensor and this must be adjusted to present what we actually ‘see’ in the room.
Commonly, there are artefacts that we probably don’t notice when entering a room, such as cables, vents or sockets that become noticeable in a static image and we can remove these or make them less intrusive. We sometimes even have to remove ourselves from the image, where the photographer or equipment are caught in reflections.
Light post-production plays a crucial role in enhancing portrait photography by refining essential elements such as skin tone, contrast, and sharpness. These subtle adjustments help to smooth out minor imperfections, highlight natural facial features, and balance lighting to create a polished yet authentic appearance. The goal is to maintain the true essence of the subject while presenting a more professional and visually appealing image.
In addition to standard corrections, we can work closely with you to achieve the specific impression or effect you desire in your portraits. For instance, while our baseline approach is to aim for a natural representation of colour and tone, you might prefer a more stylised or emphatic look with richer tones or deeper contrasts. We always discuss your preference to ensure the final results align with your vision.
It is also possible to enhance features more noticeably, such as widening and brightening eyes, enhancing smiles, or making slight adjustments to the facial structure. However, these types of edits are entirely at your discretion, allowing you to control how much enhancement is applied while still preserving the integrity of the portrait. We will happily guide you through these options to achieve a balance that best reflects your desired outcome
